Society and Culture: Who Needs A Hero? - The notion of the hero figure has long been part of popular culture. Does the prevalence of this recurrent theme over the generations indicate a deep-seated hope people have that someone will take action, come to their rescue and save them from global peril? Or in our enlightened age do we prefer our own answers to the world's complex problems?

The Value of Happiness- In A Good Childhood: Searching for Values in a Competitive Age (2009), The Children's Society, a charitable organization in the United Kingdom that seeks to make childhood better for all children, sought the views of over 30,000 children, parents and professionals about the current state of childhood. Based on a major inquiry commissioned in 2006, the report refers to a 2007 UNCIF finding indicating that British and American children are less happy than those in almost any other developed country. This is a sad indictment, especially given that in a poll taken for the inquiry, 58 percent of children, when faced with a series of options such as "to be wealthy" or "to have a good job," said that their main ambition was "to be happy." Although intended mainly for internal consumption, many of the report's findings and its recommendations have universal application. Indeed, Bob Reitemeier, Chief Executive of The Children's Society has said: "This landmark report is a wake-up call to us all."

The Violent Heart- Despite our best efforts toward peace, the story of humanity is in large part the story of animosity and violence. What is it about people that leads them to treat one another as adversaries?

Who Am I? The Question of Youth Violence- "In violence we forget who we are," wrote American novelist and literary critic Mary McCarthy in 1961. Her indictment was aimed at writers who had come to depend heavily on "sensation" and had "lost interest in the social," but it has become all the more relevant in a world where a focus on the sensational has escaped from fiction to permeate real life. And sadly, concern about losing oneself in violence has become as relevant to children as it has always been to adults. Almost half a century after McCarthy wrote, there is reason to believe that far too many young people-despite any number of profile pages they may have on such social networking sites as Facebook, MySpace or Bebo-may not be entirely sure of their identity.
